A polygraph examination typically lasts 2 to 4 hours and includes three main phases: the pre-test interview, the in-test data collection, and the post-test interview. The pre-test interview is the most extensive portion, allowing the examiner to review the situation and gather all relevant information. During the test itself, no more than four questions are asked in criminal or specific-issue cases, and up to six questions may be asked in pre-employment or relationship-related testing.

A post-test interview may also be conducted if a person does not pass the exam or if additional concerns arise after the test. This step is not always necessary, but it can be used when specific issues need to be addressed in greater detail.
